5 underrated modern r&b songs
Every song you see here is something that is in my library and has been in rotation for awhile. I think the r&b community often complains of the staleness of the genre , but there is good music out there. This one article is focused on the love part of r&b . Naturally I included links.
Gently- Radiant Children
This is my favorite Radiant Children song. I absolutely love the vocals from Fabienne Holloway and the instruments really bring the song whole. The reason I like this song so much is its message that the singer loves someone gently yet there are plenty of messages about taking care of oneself as well. It enforces a balance of healthier love and not the “I can’t breathe without you” messages we’re used to seeing.
Other songs I love from Radiant Children are : Poke Bowl, I Need Love and Tryin’.
Thicker Than Water- rum.gold
rum.gold is one of those artists that really captures what I love about the genre. There is so much versatility in his sound and his voice. While this song features his very light airy vocals with a simple guitar instrumental, others have variation. I enjoy this song because of the religious and cultural references that add an element of dramatics and flair for just how powerful the love described in it
Other songs I enjoy by rum.gold are Hazel Chandeliers, Human, How you Like it, Where There’s Smoke. There are so many other songs I love from his discography, and I am excited to see whats next.
Easy- Devin Tracy
Devin Tracy has such a unique voice. Its tones are so rich to me that everytime I hear it I feel transported to a world where sound is all that matters. This particular song is an expression of making up and how meaningful the relationship is. Other songs I love by Devin Tracy are Favorite Lover, thats not us, therapy and nlm.
Slow Down- VanJess
VanJess is a special duo to me for so many reasons. The sister duo of Ivana and Jess Nwokike is not unlike Chloe x Halle in that their voices compliment each other well. I would say that this duo and their music is special because the catalogue may never be expanded. Ivana stepped away from the group as of this year much to the dismay of the fans. The other songs I cherish from them are Addicted, Come Over and Roses.
Kool Aid- Kirby
Kirby is a special singer, not just because we both claim Memphis as our hometowns. Kirby has a soft melodious voice and isn’t shy about the influence of older musicians and different genres of music. Other favorites by Kirby: We don’t funk, Velvet, Loved By You and Boyz II Men
