The Soft Black Love Archive: Introduction

I am a connoisseur of love stories. I love crying to them, rejoicing with them, and talking about them to my friends. I mean, that’s my whole thing, right? Love and happiness fuel me. What I realized over time is that a lot of love stories from my own culture seem to be stained in some way. I think the old tropes and stereotypes are not a complete picture of what happens within our community. If you were to search for Black Love stories, you’d see classics like Love and Basketball, Love Jones, If Beale Street Could Talk, or even Think Like a Man. I think those stories are entertaining in their own right, but where are the classic stories like When Harry Met Sally with characters that look like me? Why do most of these stories include a “struggle love”? I’m over it. I don’t know about you guys, but I am over it. So this series is dedicated to Black Love Stories. I will highlight books, films, and maybe some TV shows that display black love without the race-specific tropes.

Let me be clear, I love love stories from every race, ethnicity, and culture. This just happens to be my culture that I am commenting on. I’ll see you all in the archives
